I looked into the taskbar events at MSDN and it didn't mention any mouse events at all for the taskbar itself, only taskbar objects. So I'm not sure there even is an event fired when the mouse leaves the taskbar proper.

There must be an event.  Explorer is the window manager, and it should receive events just like all other windows.  To make the mechanism different than all other applications would be unnecessarily complicated.  It may not be documented because Explorer is an internal program, there is no need to document it's implementation.

Even if not, VMWare controls the pointer hardware, it could send a message saying the mouse is just outside the window if necessary.  This seems like a really easy problem to solve.  But I think it may not be a high priority, I don't know if many people run with the taskbar shown.  I find it essential, however, with programs like Office (2007-2010) which have multiple taskbar buttons, but only one window (which VMware doesn't recognize, therefore only identifies one icon on the mac dock).  There literally is no way to switch documents without going through a lot of pain!
