Hi,
I am buying a new server to run ESXi. We've setteled on a DL380 with 2 x 8 core CPUs and 128GB of RAM.
We intend to run mostly SQL machines for internal testing and demos. We may put excahnge or the odd linux box
onto it but for the most part they will be Win 2008/2012 servers runnign MS SQL. We have an external 3TB MSA70
that will will use to run the databases from, it's got 26 x 146GB 10k SAS so should be fast enough read/write for out needs.
We also intend to get some internal storage which we will use to run the ESX OS and our Guest OSs.
The question is do I really need high speed SAS disk for this opperation? We have a choice of 15k, 10k and 7.2k,
with varying sizes and prices. Obviously the 7.2k disks are the chapest. Do I need the higher sppeds for no production
virtual servers? Is there a massive performance difference?
Thanks
