Re: NIC teaming and Link Aggregation groups

Q1 - is there any benefit in setting up a LAG on the switch for these 4 ports? Am I likely to see any performance increase across the network of approx 100 users?

The key advantage of LAG / IP hash is that if running a virtual machine with many incoming users (from different IP addresses) that traffic could be spread over all interfaces, meaning in theory a VM could get 4 Gbit of bandwidth. You could begin by studying the present use of your network links and if you do see that one or several servers often max out the 1 Gbit connection then it might be interesting to continue.

Also note that if the present link is maxed from e.g. backup then you will likely not get any advantage of IP Hash, it only works with multiple IP clients.

Q2 - is there any good reason NOT to set up the LAG?

The good reasons are in my opinion:

Most often you do not actually need the extra bandwidth available in theory.

The default Port ID gives a decent load balancing of the VMs.

The default Port ID allows you actually better redundancy by allowing you to connect to several physical switches.

IP Hash / LAG increases the complexity of your setup a lot.

If IP Hash and the physical LAG is incorrectly configured you will see many hard-to-explain network connectivity errors.
