How do I know correct VMTools is installed?

I run VMWare 5.0.3 on 10.8.2 (will hold off on 10.8.3 after reading this forum tonite). After I updated to 5.0.3, the vMachine said

said to reinstall the Tools. so I tried but nothing started. So went to GUIDe and found out how to find <windows.iso> for update 5.0.3.

I *think* I followed the guide OK. A splash panel came up and guided me thru th process, I then shut down & restarted,

Now under VMachines it STILL says :"Reinstall the Tools"

1) So what did I do wrong?

2) AND how does one KNOW the correct TOOLs version is installed (if at all)

My Win 7-64bit  OS worked OK it seemed.
