I certainly understand the need to have support for >4GB and to that end because I move between Windows, Linux and OS X I typically will partition my portable external drives with 4 partitions, HFS+, NTFS, FAT32 and ext2.  I do have Read/Write drivers under OS X/Widows to be able to fully access the various Filesystems however I only enable writing to NTFS under OS X and or HFS+ under Windows in special cases.  Obviously with smaller drives this may not be economical however the smallest portable external drive I've purchased lately is 1.5 TB so I can slice it up comfortably with the partition size percentages balanced to suite my primary needs.
