Re: Avalaible Space Needed for Disk Consolidation

To be honest, I'm not really sure what's going on. There are virtual disks in the log file which do not exist (according to the screenshot), and I'm not talking about the second mailserver.vmdk which is located on another datastore. I'm talking about "mailserver_1.vmdk" which is configured as "independent-persistent" (i.e. should be exluded from snapshots, but there is one), and "mailserver_5.vmdk" which replaces "mailserver_1.vmdk" on "scsi0:1" by Hot-Removing/Hot-Adding the virtual disk (shown at the end of the logfile).

Maybe it will help to run RVTools to find out whether there are files which might be osolete (marked as "zomies" in RVTool's output.)

You are right, this definitely doesn't look so good. The file should start with "KDMV" followed by some binary information, and some text which describes the virtual disk.

Do you still have access to the original files?

Hello,

Welcome to Workstation Community!

I'm sorry for the problem you met. You should be able to upload log files. But maybe your core dump file is too large... Could you please share it to us via cloud storage? Like: Baidu Cloud.

Thanks,

Shawn

VXRAIL and vSAN

Hi All,

We are in process of evaluating a VXRAIL G Series Gen-4 (I guess that's vxrail 3.5 - released in June 2016?) - it's a hybrid configuration with 1 x 400GB SSD and 3 x 2TB per node in a 3 Node configuration to start with. I have the following questions:

a) Does the vSAN 6.2 design and sizing guide applies to VXRAIL - when designing /sizing?

b) VXRAIL G Series Gen-4 - does that comes pre-installed with vSphere 6u2 and vSAN 6.2?

c) I have read some articles where a 3 Node VSAN cluster is not always the recommended option and a 4 Node is preferred / recommended - is this the case with VXRAIL as well?

d) Calculating the usable capacity on VXRAIL (3 Nodes) with 1 x 400GB SSD and 3 x 2TB per node, that should reveal RAW 18TB (Base-10) capacity? with FTT=1 that will be 9TiB Base - 2 usable capacity - as that will make another copy of the data blocks across the cluster - Right?

e) I will be hosting about 50 - 70 Virtual machines on this VXRAIL, as per my understanding the FTT=1 is on a per disk group basis, If I create a single disk-group across the entire 3 node cluster - I will have all my virtual machines protected with FTT=1 for a single failure ( of a host / disk in the disk group)?

Will be grateful if someone can assist here - there's alot to consider when sizing the VSAN - even with vxrail - thanks

Best regards

Umar

Thanks for your assistance.

Turns out it was a chinese hacker...

I had opened ports on my router in order to remotely access the server and within a few hours I had someone trying to brute force the password.

Re: NSX, and how to rename logical Siwtch and get it enforced to the underlaying Distributed Portgroups

This is the expected behavior (renaming a logical switch in NSX does not change the backing dvPortgroup name). Currently there is no way to enforce the change between constructs. I have been tracking a feature request to add this functionality. I cannot comment on if/when it will be committed, but engineering is aware and a feature request is in process.

Re: Resizing vmdk ESXi 5.5

Welcome to the Community,

What you may do is to use VMware Converter and convert the VM to your local PC's HDD (assuming there's sufficient free disk space). In a second step convert the VM back to the ESXi host. During the first run you may opt to resize the virtual disk (in the advanced disk settings).

Vmware Essentials PCI Passthrough

Hi All,

Quite an obscure question this one, does the vmware essentials support pci passthrough - currently running a trial of vsphere 6 in a lab envrionment passing through a pci device from the server and is working just fine, however I dont know if this is a supported feature of vmware essentials as not clear from the matrix.

Also again bit obscure can anyone confirm if the vsphere essentials product supports the nvidia grid shared gpu feature which is mentioned on this page:

http://www.vmware.com/content/dam/digitalmarketing/vmware/en/pdf/products/horizon/grid-vgpu-deployment-guide.pdf

When running through the guide you can configure shared pci vgpu to the vm (opposed to passthrough) (pages 140 to 143), I am guessing that you need actual vcenter as a product to actually do this but would be interested to know if essentials can do this from the managed appliance to the vm's on the hosts, I am aware I need a supported graphics card and hardware on server to do this.

We do have vcenter however this is a solution that might sit off our main prod network so would need its own management interested to see if I can keep costs down for the business.

thanks

I found an answer to my dilemma.  I was able to block OneDrive using Application Blocking feature in UEM.  UEM by default will only allow programs that start from Windows, Program Files, and Program Files (x86) to run.  If I need to, I can allow other programs that do not start from one of those directories.

He is already working on it, but it seems to be a difficult one... :-/

I was hoping for some extra ideas or anyone who dealt with the same problem and is willing to share his experiences.

It is totally frustrating to see the partition still exists but cannot get access to it.

Re: Script to clean up datastores

This is looking excellent! I just wanted to make sure I understand correctly as this is a touchy script.  If I run this line:

Get-Datastore-NameMyDS|Get-VmwOrphan|Remove-VmwFile-WhatIf

Nothing will get deleted, because of the whatif tag.  If I remove that tag, all will get deleted. And if I run your first example it should look like 2 lines, first use this line:

Get-Datastore-NameMyDS|Get-VmwOrphan|Export-Csv-Pathreport-orphan.csv-NoTypeInformation-UseCulture

Then if the output looks acceptable, then run this command:

Import-Csv-Pathreport-orphan.csv-UseCulture|Remove-VmwFile-WhatIf

Again a huge thanks!!

Re: vRA 7.1 - AWS Endpoint data-collection succeeds, but returns no compute resources.

$

The workflow to delete the Original AWS endpoint crashed and left an old (still functional) credential in the SQL database (DynamicOps.AmazonWSModel.AccessKeys table).  According to engineering this is a known bug. Apparently, each time we tried to create the new endpoint and specify new credentials, vRA 'saw' the old credentials, and would therefore not reconize data collection as new information and would not populate any new Compute Resources.  To fix the issue, we modified the old credential entry to 'break it' with a bogus access key and then it accepted the new credentials and worked properly and displayed the appropriate compute resources.
